Clubs must spend money to win trophies - goal.com

Roberto Mancini defended Manchester City's big spending by insisting that splashing a lot of cash is the only way to win a Premier League title.

The former Inter Milan boss has already dished out £59 million this summer, which takes the amount spent under owner Sheikh Mansour to £265 million in less than two years.

After making moves for David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng, Mancini is still not finished as is seeking a striker and a defender to add to his squad.

Mancini believes that City’s exorbitant spending is not out of the norm as many of the elite clubs in Europe get to the top by spending a lot of money.

"Of course we have spent a lot of money this summer," Mancini told The Mirror.

"Everyone can see that is the case, but all the teams who have won the Premier League, or La Liga or Serie A in recent years have spent a lot of money.

"This is not a new thing.

“It is hard to win trophies anywhere if you do not invest in the team in areas where you can improve.

“That's what we have done this summer."

City are looking to crack the top four of the Premier League this season after narrowly missing out on a Champions League berth to Tottenham Hotspur last season, ending the year in fifth place.
