West Brom's team spirit can see them stay in Premier League - goal.com

West Bromwich Albion forward Giles Barnes believes that team spirit will be key in Albion's fight against relegation next season - and the 21-year-old believes that the Baggies have it in abundance.

Barnes was a part of the Derby County squad which in 2007-8 won just one Premier League match all season, but despite the side's struggles, Barnes still caught the eye.

After an injury-hit couple of seasons, Barnes is looking forward to another shot at the top-flight.

"This team is totally different to that Derby side," he told West Brom's official website.

"We get on so well as a team and as individuals - and that's an amazing base to start from.

"We want to do well for each other and for ourselves. It's a good foundation and with the talent we've got, we can do well next season."

Barnes feels that West Brom can take inspiration from Alex McLeish's Birmingham City, who thrived in the Premier League last season when many predicted they would struggle following their promotion from the Championship - buoyed by a team spirit that Barnes witnessed first hand.

"We have to mirror ourselves on teams who have gone up and stayed up, like Birmingham, for example," said Barnes.

"Who would have thought they would have gone up and done so well? That's what we've got to try and emulate.

"Before signing here, I had a brief training spell at Birmingham in January so I saw what their dressing room was like - team spirit was the key there. They've got a good, tight-knit group where everyone gets on.

"That brings good winning ways because they want to kick, fight, scrap and win for each other. But there is also a bond here."
