Craig Gordon has struggled with injury in recent months

Gordon has undergone what the club describe as a "minor operation" but it is reported that the injury could sideline the Scotland international for up to three months.

In November 2009 Gordon suffered a similar injury following a collision with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and did not appear for the Black Cats again until January 23.

Sunderland have not confirmed the likely duration of Gordon's recovery, only that he "is set to miss the start of the season".

Gordon joined Sunderland for a fee of £9 million in August 2007 and has made 72 Premier League appearances for the club.
