Rooney millions court bid fails-eurosport

Wayne Rooney has been ordered to pay only nominal damages after his former agency tried to sue him for £4.5 million.

Proactive argued that Rooney owed them £4.5m commission from deals brokered while he was with the firm. The England star, who was not in court, was sued by sports management firm Proactive. Rooney left Proactive in 2008 when Paul Stretford, the company's founder, left acrimoniously and took the player with him.

Judge Brendan Hegarty QC, who had delayed the ruling until after the World Cup, ruled that Rooney's original contract with Proactive represented a "restraint of trade" as it was up to eight years long when the FA recommended a maximum of two years.

Rooney, who is on holiday in the Caribbean, issued a statement saying he was "delighted" with the verdict.

The statement added: "I was stunned when Proactive, which is now part of James Grant Group, claimed in court that (my wife) Coleen and I owed them at first £8.3 million and then £4.5 million," he said.

"Coleen and I have always been happy to pay all commissions due to the people who were owed them.

"But these sums were a joke and we felt they were just an attempt to exploit us."
